Cinematic Comfort: Movies Close to My Heart

Movies have a remarkable way of leaving indelible imprints on our lives, shaping our perspective and even influencing our identities. I come from a family of cinephiles. We're at the theater almost every week. Watching movies together is not just a pastime, but a cherished tradition that means a lot to me. I think it's unfortunate when people say they don't go to the theater anymore. Some of my favorite theaters in New York include The Angelika, IFC, Film Forum, Regal Battery Park, Nitehawk and the Alamo Drafthouse. Here are some movies that hold a special place in my heart

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Margot Tenenbaum isn't just a character; she's an enigmatic figure that I've admired for years. I even dressed up as her for Halloween in college, embracing her style. Interestingly, when I was ten years old, a few news outlets said I reminded them of Margot Tenenbaum. The film by Wes Anderson explores family dynamics in a quirky yet profound way that continues to inspire me. Anderson's unique style—his carefully composed shots, balanced framing and vibrant colors stands out. Plus the soundtracks in his films are unforgettable characters in their own right.

The Goonies (1985)

The Goonies is deeply cherished by me and my siblings. It's such a funny and iconic film. There are so many memorable moments from Chunk's hilarious lines to Mouth's witty quips and the dynamic among the group. I think the film celebrates the resilience of youth. It’s a mix of adventure, humor and heart that keeps people of all ages hooked. Growing up, one of our cars had a little TV and The Goonies was always a go to movie. Unfortunately, I often got super car sick, so I tried my best to look away from the screen during those car rides, but it was hard!

The Breakfast Club (1985)

One of my all time favorites. This film beautifully explores teenage identity and connection. John Hughes captures high school stereotypes and adolescent complexities with honesty and heart. It's a movie that stays with me, highlighting the importance of empathy and the bonds that can form between unexpected friends.

Sixteen Candles (1984)
Like many, I've had the hope of finding my own Jake Ryan. I even visited the church near Chicago where a memorable scene was filmed, reenacting it with my friend Josie – a cherished geeky moment. John Hughes' ability to blend comedy with heartfelt moments makes Sixteen Candles a nostalgic favorite that still speaks to the teenage dreamer in me.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off is pure cinematic gold. Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is a classic film directed by John Hughes. The story follows a charismatic high school student named Ferris Bueller, played by Matthew Broderick, who decides to skip school for a day and embark on a crazy outing in Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) and best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck). In homage to Ferris, I filmed the beginning of the movie for my senior project, complete with the iconic song and a towel clad monologue to the camera. Matthew Broderick's Ferris remains a symbol of charm and a reminder to truly live life boldly.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)
Oh, the nostalgia! First, let's talk about the iconic "Sing to me, Paolo!" scene. It's etched into my memory as a moment of pure movie magic. Lizzie McGuire, played by Hilary Duff embarks on a whirlwind adventure in Rome that's both hilarious and heartwarming. One of my brothers and I share a special bond over this film. We often quote lines to each other. I even owned the movie on VHS! I used to see Hilary Duff drive around LA in her G Wagon and think she’s the coolest. It's funny to think about how in the movie, Lizzie McGuire only just graduated 8th grade!

The Lost Boys (1987)
Definitely in my top 5. The Lost Boys blends horror with humor and '80s flair in a way that's unforgettable. It revolves around two brothers, Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim), who move to a small strange town in California with their mother (Dianne Wiest). It’s a movie I've seen a million times—growing up with my family, at drive-ins during college and even while living in Ireland. With great characters and an unreal soundtrack, it's a true cinematic gem.

Whiplash (2014)

"Whiplash," directed by Damien Chazelle, follows Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), a young drummer. The film portrays Neiman's journey to greatness under the tough mentorship of Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons). Teller's performance captures the highs and lows of chasing dreams making every drumbeat and emotion feel real. Personally, I've admired Miles Teller since his role in the 2011 remake of "Footloose," where my mom accurately predicted his rise to stardom. "Whiplash" solidifies Teller as one of my favorite actors, showcasing his talent in a role that leaves a lasting impression.

Good Will Hunting (1997)
Good Will Hunting is a masterpiece that resonates with me on a deeply emotional level. Matt Damon and Robin Williams deliver performances that tug at the heartstrings, exploring themes of intellect, trauma and personal growth. The soundtrack by Elliott Smith further enhances the film's emotional depth.

 The Virgin Suicides (1999)
Both the book by Jeffrey Eugenides and Sofia Coppola's adaptation of The Virgin Suicides are hauntingly beautiful. It has a dreamlike atmosphere, poignant narrative, anchored by Kirsten Dunst's performance

Point Break (1991)

"Point Break," directed by Kathryn Bigelow is an action-packed thriller known for its surfing and skydiving scenes and standout performances that have made it a classic. The film stars Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah, an FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a gang of bank-robbing surfers led by the charismatic Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayze. I love this movie. I even had a Point Break poster in my college dorm room.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton, tells the story of Edward, an artificial man with scissors for hands, who is discovered and brought into a suburban community. One of the things that struck me the most about Edward Scissorhands is its beautiful soundtrack, composed by Danny Elfman. The acting in Edward Scissorhands is equally mesmerizing.  Johnny Depp delivers a performance that captures Edward's innocence. Winona Ryder's portrayal of Kim adds depth to the narrative, exploring themes of love and longing for acceptance. I’ll never forget visiting Tim Burton’s exhibit at the MOMA. It was a surreal experience. Burton has always had a unique vision and is a masterful storyteller. 

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
This modern adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew is irresistible. From the charismatic performances to the soundtrack, 10 Things I Hate About You captures the essence of teenage romance and remains a timeless favorite. I've always liked the paintball date depicted in the movie—it's a memorable scene that I've always wanted to experience firsthand.

Kill Bill (2003)

Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" is a cinematic masterpiece that effortlessly blends elements of action, revenge and homage to classic martial arts films. The story follows The Bride, a former assassin seeking vengeance against her colleagues who betrayed her. The film is filled with Tarantino's signature dialogue, stunning choreography and a memorable soundtrack.

Alice in Wonderland (1951)

As a child, few stories captured my imagination like the Disney classic, "Alice in Wonderland." Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske, this animated film brings Lewis Carroll's tale to life with vibrant animation and unforgettable characters such as Alice, the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, and Queen of Hearts. The movie's charm lies in its ability to transport us to a world where anything can happen. During my toddler years, I insisted on wearing an Alice in Wonderland dress every day.  Alice's curiosity and sense of adventure resonated with me. I was eager to explore the world around me. Alice in Wonderland is a beautiful film.
